In
Egyptian mythology,
Mafdet was an early
panther-
goddess, known as a destroyer of
scorpions,
snakes and other venomous
animals. She was associated with
cats and
mongooses (both of which kill snakes) and was known to protect from the dangerous effects of snakebites.
